NRL Hunter is an exciting and rapidly expanding series that connects hunting with rifle competition. Each stage is designed as a blind stage to simulate a hunting scenario. Are you curious about trying it out but unsure where to start? Do you want to enhance your knowledge and experience? Are you an experienced shooter in another field looking to transition? This course could be perfect for you! It offers a fantastic chance to test your marksmanship and develop your skills and confidence for the match. No prior match experience is necessary.

Disclaimer: not sanctioned by or affiliated with NRL Hunter.

What the training is:

The day will start with comprehensive match preparation in a classroom setting, covering topics like what to anticipate at an NRL Hunter match, an overview of rules and divisions, breakdown of matches and stages, rifle, caliber, and gear selection, "what's in my pack," and how to practice at home, along with an interactive Q&A session. A broad array of commonly used gear will be available for you to examine, including examples of Factory, Open Light, and Open Heavy rifles, range-finding binoculars, tripods, bipods, and various other shooting equipment.

We will transition from the classroom to the Long Distance Precision Rifle Range (LDPR) for practical application and live fire. Beginning with a brief session to confirm 100 yard zero, verify dope and chronograph – provided if needed. We will walk through practice stages built to closely emulate match conditions. Stages are blind, so you must find/identify your target(s), range the distance(s) and engage the target(s) in less than 4 minutes. Discussions will cover: time management, gear management, examples of what to look for on approach to the sighting position, Range Officer (R.O.) communication, navigating multiple shooting positions and examples of pitfalls to avoid.

Participants will have the opportunity to run through multiple live fire stages on the clock, where they will receive coaching and feedback. There will be additional blind stages where participants will test their newly acquired skills.

What the training is not:

This match preparation course is not designed for beginners or as an introductory rifle class. Participants should already have a solid foundation in shooting skills, as these will not be covered in this session. Shooters must be able to safely handle their firearms at all times and should be familiar with the operation of their rifle and scope, as well as have precise D.O.P.E. (scope elevation adjustments) for distances up to at least 700 yards. This is not the occasion to bring an untested rifle or a newly mounted scope that requires extensive time to zero, as the schedule is tight and such activities would detract from the planned training. If you are a seasoned and skilled NRL Hunter match shooter, this class may not be suitable for you, as it is aimed at those who are relatively new to NRL Hunter matches.

Rifle and general range requirements:
NRL Hunter has specific equipment rules based upon which Division you plan to compete in a match. This will be discussed in greater depth during the train up.

To view a complete list of Divisions as well as NRL Hunter rules. Please visit this link: https://nrlhunter.org/about/rules/

To accommodate a wide range of participants, we will not require students to meet specific NRL class rifle guidelines, with one adjustment: the maximum muzzle velocity for all rifles is set at 3200 fps according to CRC range regulations. Steel core or armor-piercing ammunition is prohibited. Open carry or concealed carry of pistols is not allowed. Eye and ear protection are mandatory. As CRC is a wildlife refuge, all wildlife is protected. The use of drugs or alcohol is strictly forbidden.

Essential gear list for training day:
  • Safe functioning, centerfire rifle, .30 caliber or below, with recommended accuracy of 1 MOA or better. Detachable box magazine(s) recommended. Participants will be shooting up to 8 rounds per stage. Bring 100 rounds for the day and any additional required for zero confirmation and Chronograph.
  • Riflescope with elevation turret or reticle capable of dialing or holdover to a minimum of 700 yards.
  • Chamber flag/ empty chamber indicators are required at all times off of the firing line. Chamber flags will be provided.
  • Backpack/daypack capable of carrying all of your shooting gear internally and/or attached to the outside. Shooters may carry their rifle and an optic in hand to begin a stage. All other gear must be stowed.
  • Optic(s) for locating and ranging targets. This may include a combination of binoculars, handheld or rifle mounted rangefinder, range finding binoculars, spotting scope, etc.
  • A fast method to access and record your D.O.P.E.  A wrist coach with preprinted D.O.P.E.. or rangefinder with internal ballistics are good examples. Attempting to manipulate a Kestrel or ballistics app on your phone are not ideal on the clock. Examples of preprinted D.O.P.E. cards will be provided.
  • Support equipment: Bipod, Tripod, shooting bag/support bag/rear bag. While these are not required to participate, they are widely considered essential gear.
  • Food and drink: please bring your lunch, snacks and drinks.

*There will be a selection of demo gear available for participants to test and share: Tripods with tac tables or RRS Anvil 30 ball heads, range finding binos, shooting bags in a variety of sizes and weights, positional pillows, etc.
